MAP Essence Update — What's changing, when, and what you need to do

MAP Essence is getting its biggest upgrade yet. Version 3.0 is shorter for candidates, sharper for you, and designed to make screening results easier to defend and explain. This article walks you through everything you need to know — what's changing, why, and what to do before MAP Essence 2.0 is retired in November.

The short version

What: MAP Essence moves from version 2.0 to version 3.0. The assessment is shorter (55 items instead of 75), with retuned Integrity and Service lenses and a new norm group built for high-stakes screening.

When:

What you need to do: From October 12, all new recruitments will already be running on 3.0 automatically — no setup needed. Between now and November 23, close out or relaunch any open 2.0 recruitments so nothing is left running past the cutover.

What's new in MAP Essence 3.0

MAP Essence 3.0 was rebuilt around the facets that matter most for prediction. The result is a tighter, more focused assessment that keeps the measurement quality of the previous version while delivering a better experience for everyone involved.

Shorter for candidates. The assessment is 55 items instead of 75 — roughly a 25% reduction. Candidates complete it faster, with less drop-off and a better overall experience.

Sharper prediction. Both the Integrity and Service lens algorithms have been retuned. The new weights are based on a combination of construct-validity research and explainability, so the final trait rank order is rational and easy to justify to hiring managers.

More explainable results. Facet selection prioritizes the hallmark traits — the facets most associated with how each trait is commonly interpreted. For example, in Extraversion we weight Sociability higher than Activity, because Sociability is the strongest predictor and the dimension most people associate with the trait.

Fairer outcomes. Item bias has been eliminated and the assessment is designed to reduce the impact of social desirability responding.

A purpose-built norm group. Version 2.0 used a general norm group. Version 3.0 uses a stratified norm group of 1,645 people, composed to reflect the actual population that takes high-stakes screening assessments.

      0.75–0.85 (mean: 0.82)

      0.90–0.95 (mean: 0.93)

Note: correlations between traits in MAP and MAP Essence are weaker in 3.0 than in 2.0. This is by design — fewer items per trait and a selective facet inclusion mean MAP Essence 3.0 is purpose-built for screening rather than a shortened version of the full MAP.

The science: which facets are included

Each Big-5 trait in MAP Essence 3.0 is measured by the facets that best predict performance and best reflect how the trait is commonly interpreted.

Extraversion — EX1 Social Need, EX2 Social Image, EX3 Work Pace, EX5 Cheerfulness. Sociability with a preference for high pace but not necessarily risk.

Agreeableness — AG1 Trust, AG2 Diplomacy, AG3 Helpfulness, AG5 Conflict Aversion. Strong weight on kindness and respectfulness in action, but not necessarily from compassion.

      Conscientiousness — CO2 Structure, CO4 Self-Discipline, CO5 Decision-Making. Focus on diligence, not necessarily determination.

Emotional Stability — ES2 Mood Stability, ES4 Self-Control, ES5 Stress Tolerance. Composure with a tendency to navigate well in stressful situations, not focusing on resilience.

Openness — OP1 Imagination, OP4 Variety, OP5 Mindset. Focus on exploration and innovation, not including sensibility.

      The screening lenses

MAP Essence 3.0 keeps the two screening lenses you already use, but both have been retuned.

Integrity lens — predicts a candidate's potential performance in operational roles. It focuses on behaviors that affect a candidate's tendency to follow rules and protocols, even in busy environments or for repetitive tasks. Trait weights, highest first: Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, Risk. Risk items are scored in reverse to optimize prediction.

Service lens — predicts a candidate's potential performance in a service role. It focuses on behaviors that benefit service delivery and customer satisfaction. Trait weights, highest first: Agreeableness, Emotional Stability, Conscientiousness, Extraversion.

      The new norm group

The MAP Essence 3.0 norm group has 1,645 people, stratified to reflect the high-stakes recruitment population:

              Timeline and migration

There are two dates you should put in your calendar now.

              October 12, 2026 — Launch

MAP Essence 3.0 activates at the organization level for all clients. From this date, every newly created recruitment automatically runs on version 3.0 — there's no setup or opt-in step. Existing recruitments continue running on 2.0 as normal.

              November 23, 2026 — Automatic migration

On this date, we will close all recruitments still running on MAP Essence 2.0. After the cutoff:

                    What you should do

To make the transition smooth, we recommend the following steps:

                    Between now and October 12

                          From October 12 onwards

                                By November 23

                                    Frequently asked questions

Will the scoring scale change? No. Results use the same scale you're used to, so you can compare 3.0 results to 2.0 results at the lens level. The underlying weights and norm group have changed, so absolute scores may differ slightly for the same candidate.

Will candidates already in the middle of a 2.0 assessment lose their progress? Anyone who completes their 2.0 assessment before November 23 is unaffected. After that date, incomplete 2.0 assessments will be closed and those candidates would need to be invited to a new 3.0 recruitment.

Why are the MAP correlations weaker in 3.0? By design. MAP Essence 3.0 includes fewer items per trait and selects only the facets that best predict outcomes and reflect the hallmark interpretation of each trait. This makes it sharper for screening but less of a direct shortened version of the full MAP. If you need full Big-5 measurement, use MAP rather than MAP Essence.

Has reliability changed? The mean reliability is identical (alpha = 0.76). The range is slightly tighter in 3.0 (0.74–0.79) compared with 2.0 (0.70–0.83).

Is the new lens logic backwards compatible with my previous Integrity and Service score history? Lens scores remain on the same scale and represent the same constructs. The weighting and underlying facet selection have changed, so we recommend treating 3.0 results as the new baseline rather than mixing 2.0 and 3.0 scores for trend analysis.

Can I opt out of the migration? No. The automatic migration applies to all clients on November 23. After that date, MAP Essence 2.0 is no longer available.

Will my admins or recruiters need to do anything in the platform on the migration date? No platform action is required. The switch happens automatically. Your only job is to make sure open 2.0 recruitments are closed out or relaunched before the cutoff.

Will candidates notice the change? Yes — and positively. The assessment is shorter (around 25% less time), so candidate completion rates and experience should improve.
